Play-bys, for those of you new to RPing, are pictures players use to illustrate their characters. There are several things to keep in mind when choosing a faceclaim/playby:
1. Do they realistically look like your character? Photomanipulations are allowed, if they are done well (That’s the only way I can get by with Laetel’s wings), but don’t choose a relatively average-heighted play-by and then say that your character is a towering beast of muscle. Performers should look like they could feasibly pull off their act. Good examples are Ronco and Alabastor, canon strongmen that have wrestlers as their playbys.
2. Are there a lot of pictures of the playby? You’re going to be using this face a lot, so make sure you have a number of good, useable pictures before you completely decide on this person.
3. Are they taken? A taken face-claim is completely off limits, unless THAT player decides otherwise and gives it up. The only exception is a pair of twins, and the admins must be notified if this is taking place.
4. Am I merely picking this play-by BECAUSE I like the actor/actress/series? We find that Twilight actors are a particular issue with this. Just make sure if you use these actors that their faces/features would be absolutely vital to the character and do NOT base said character off of their roles.
5. Do I have PERMISSION to use the pictures of this playby? This generally isn't an issue for pictures of celebrities, but in the case of stock models, or pictures from art sites (DeviantART, ect), please request the artist's permission to use their photos, especially if they EXPLICITLY say that they have certain policies on the usage of their pictures. Some artists, justifiable, have issues with people using their pictures for RPGs.
6. You CAN use pictures of RL (real life) people, like your friends, as play-bys. Just make sure they're okay with it.
Any questions, PM Officer Laetel or Ringmaster Adrien.
