AERIAL SILK
-- is a type of performance where an artist performs aerial acrobatics while suspended by a special fabric. the performer climbs the silk without the use of safety wires and relies only on their training to ensure safety. the performer uses the fabric to wrap, suspend, fall, swing, and spiral their body into and out of various positions and may be used to fly through the air, striking poses and figures while flying. routines are an exciting display of athleticism, coordination and flexibility.
ANIMAL ACTS
--performances put on to show either the prowess of, tricks, or special abilities of animals with the assistance of a trainer. These feats can include riding exotic animals, "dangerous" tricks, magic tricks involving animals, humor acts, or shock-and-awe acts. Circus animals at the Circo de Anima include horses, tigers, lions, elephants, birds, rabbits, sea lions, bears, other big cats, and the occasional penguin.
BALANCING
-- balancing is a very open ended act which generally requires a lot of upper body strength, flexibility and strong technique. balancing can extend from partner and multiple work to balancing on chairs, bars or other props.
CHINESE POLES
-- are vertical steel poles on which circus performers climb, slide down and hold poses. the poles are generally between 3 and 9 meters in height and approximately 3 to 4 inches in diameter. this rotating pole allows a performer to spin on the vertical axis, giving a performer the ability to incorporate rate of spin into what would otherwise be static moves. bringing the performers body closer to the pole causes the performer to spin faster.
CLOWNS
-- comical performers, who entertain spectators by acting in a hilarious fashion. often clowning is not seen as demanding as other circus acts, but there is a lot of physical performance within clowning. being a clown involves being quick on your feet and taking risks, all the while keeping everyone laughing.
CONTORTION
-- a very unusual form of physical display that involves dramatic bending and flexing of the human body. contortionists have unusual human flexibility, but also enhance their skills with gymnastics.
CORDE LISSE
-- similar to aerial silk, but instead of a special fabric are ropes made of soft cotton approximately 25-30mm thick. moves are usually a combination of held positions and drops and require great skill and strength as there is no safety line, and the performers have to depend upon their strength not to fall.
DIABOLO
-- a juggling trick that holds the prop of a spool which is whirled and tossed around on a string tied to two sticks held one in each hand. a variety of tricks can be used with the diabolo using the sticks, multiple spools and various body parts. diabolo performers create friction by dragging the spool across the string and generating enough power to throw the spool up in the air and perform multiple tricks. diabolo performers need a lot of patience and dedication to master the sport.
FLYING TRAPEZE
-- a trapeze act where the artist grabs onto a bar and jumps off a high platform where gravity creates the swing. the performer performs tricks and releases from the bar, often being caught by another swinger on a different platform. flying trapeze can work in partners or teams and require a lot of strength, precision and risk taking, though the trapeze is placed over a net.
HOOPERS
-- a form of dance which uses hoops as a type of prop or dance partner. hooping combines technical moves and tricks with freestyle and technical dancing and is usually accompanied by music. hoopers not only rotate hoops around their waists, but ever possible part of their body.
JUGGLERS
-- a skill involving the juggler to throw objects up, catch them and throw them back up again, all without touching the ground. common props for jugglers are balls, rings, clubs but can extend to knives and torches. juggling is usually an individual sport, but can incorporate multiples.
ROLLING GLOBE
-- a circus skill in which the performer balances atop a large sphere, sometimes taller than the performer. Various gymnastic or juggling stunts may be performed while the performer moves and controls the position of the ball with the feet and/or hands.
SPECIAL DAREDEVIL SKILLS
--acts to shock and awe that require a certain amount of finesse from the performer, including sword swallowing, fire breathing, plate-spinning, knife-throwing, and amazing feats of strength.
STATIC TRAPEZE
-- a trapeze act where the performer moves around the bar and ropes, performing a wide range of movements including balances, drops, and hangs while the bar itself stays mostly in place. the difficulty of the static trapeze is to make the moves look effortless. the art requires a lot of strength and dedication.
SWINGING TRAPEZE
-- a trapeze act where the trapeze swings. the performer builds up swing from a still position, and uses the momentum of the swing to execute their tricks. usually tricks on a swinging trapeze are thrown on the peaks of the swing and involve dynamic movements that require precise timing. most of the tricks begin with the performer sitting or standing on the bar and end with the performer catching the bar in his/her hands or in an ankle hang. this act requires a great deal of strength, grace, and flexibility.
TIGHTROPE WALKERS
-- the art of walking along a thin wire or rope, usually at a great height. there are many different styles of tightrope walking. these include: tightwire, maintaining a balance on a tension wire using by using an object (pole, umbrella, fan) to balance. often tightwire walkers use props to juggle to enhance the entertainment value. highwire, same as tightwire but at extreme heights. slackwire, where the tension of the wire is provided by the load (ie. the performer and props). slacklining, the line is not held tight, but instead stretches and bounces like a long trampoline.
TRAMPOLINE
-- acts that consist of bouncing off a trampoline. these tricks include jumps of pikes, straddles, tucks and combinations of all these to create a performance. trampoline acts can be individual or synchronized.
UNICYCLIST
-- riders who perform tricks or feats on a unicycle, or a one wheeled bicycle. unicyclists are gifted in not just their area, but another in order to have a successful, more enhanced performance. most commonly unicyclists are either trained in juggling or tightrope, incorporating the two acts together.
WHEEL OF DEATH
-- for the daredevils. a large rotating apparatus on which performers carry out synchronized acrobatic skills. the "wheel" is actually a large space frame beam with hooped tracks at either end, within which the performers can stand. As the performers run around on either the inside or outside of the hoops, the whole apparatus rotates. stationary balancing tricks can also be performed.
